(Abriddged) Moses is dead, all the old Israel has gone, having died in the forty years of desert wanderings, except Joshua and Caleb who had both been elected by JEHOVH/GOD to lead the new Israel into God's Promised Land. Numerous trials and difficulties lay ahead over the horizon. How would they fare? How were they to deal with each new and scary - sometimes impossible - situation? Joshua, Is suddenly spoken to by God. Simply He says to Joshua; "Time to go, Joshua". Yes I know there is much more that He said and we are about to look at that. What is Joshua or you thinking? Ever since he had been nominated as Moses replacement he/you had been watching how Moses dealt with things. Is Joshua thinking "Am I really up to this demanding role? Have I really got what it takes to look after four million people?" Joshua would need some assurances from God. God says to Joshua: "Now .... get ready to cross the Jordan River. (the river was well in flood because it is harvest time) Into the land I am about to give to them - to the Israelites". "As I promised Moses". Now God maps out for Joshua the
area that is to be occupied. (Look in the back of your Bible and see in
the map there the extent of ground to be occupied) "Consecrate
yourselves," says Joshua "for tomorrow the LORD will do. Words of
encouragement for Israel. Now comes the crunch. How to cross the river
and get safely to the other side? No bridges. No boats. The answer -
‘walk'! This is a walk of faith. Joshua makes it clear that although he, a fellow human being, is speaking the words of instruction, that they are actually the words of Jehovah GOD. This action by God, of the flood waters backing up, will confirm to Israel that He IS with them leading them into the Promised land. See how this works out. V 14. "So when the people broke camp to cross the Jordan, the priests carrying the ark of the covenant went ahead of them." The Ark of the Covenant represent the PRESENCE of JEHOVAH. Jehovah resides between the angels on top of the Ark. So GOD is declaring that HE will prepare the way into the Promised land for Israel and He does so for us."Yet as soon as the priests who carried the Ark reached the Jordan and their feet touched the water's edge, the waters upstream stopped flowing. It piled up in a heap a great distance away, at a town called Eden ..." (verses 14 - 16) The town of Eden lies about 20 miles from where the Israelites crossed the Jordan - check your Bible maps.Things to notice: (1) As the feet of the priest just touched the edge of the river, God acted. (2) "The priests who carried the Ark of the Covenant of the LORD stood firm on dry ground in the middle of the Jordan, while all Israel passed by until the whole nation had completed the crossing on dry ground" (Verse 17).This crossing was not for just the elect - the priests - BUT for the whole nation. There was estimated to be about four million people crossed over that day, all on ‘dry ground', over a land bridge that was some thing like ten miles wide so there was no crowding or need to push or shove. Father God is ready to lead us, as individuals and as a Fellowship, into a land of His promise where He will do ‘amazing things among' usAre we ready to follow where He leads us in 2019?
Over the next few months I am intending to walk with Joshua and Caleb as
the new Israel takes possession of the God given land. Will you join me
in this venture?
